In the 1940’s Harriett grows up working on her family’s tobacco farm in a South Central Wisconsin Norwegian community.\u00a0 She wears a dress to school and church and always helps her mother, but Harriett is the ultimate tomboy.\u00a0 She adores her brother Berton and works with him in the field and on cars and equipment.\u00a0 With “Pa” she observes his quiet and sometimes stern demeanor comparing it with the gentleness of “Ma”.
